Should I keep my $895 Business Platinum? How I used Miles to decide

Andy compares his Business Platinum's credits with its annual fee and uses Miles to decide whether to keep, cancel, or downgrade.

The annual fee on my Amex Business Platinum posted on September 28. With 30 days to cancel it with a full refund, this is how I decided with Miles.

The short version: I downgraded to a Business Gold. The Platinum's credits were worth $500 to me against an $895 fee. The Gold's $375 fee is covered by credits I already use: $240 from the Flexible Business credit, and the rest from the ChatGPT Business credit.

What I actually got out of the card

I started by exporting my transactions from Copilot and syncing them with Miles so Miles had my latest actual credits received.

Credit2025 (Sep–Dec)2026 (Jan–Oct)Total
FHR credits$300$600$900
Airline fee$200$200$400
Dell$150$150$300
Hilton$50$150$200
CLEAR Plus$0$199$199
Wireless$40$40$80
ChatGPT Business$0$50$50
Total$740$1,389$2,129

Against that, the card had charged me $1,590 in fees over the first two years: $695, then $895.

What the next year is worth to me

Next, I asked Miles, "The annual fee on my Business Platinum just hit. What should I do?" It used my logged credits and my wallet to estimate the Platinum's value for the year ahead, then asked me where its assumptions were off.

I provided my expectations for the upcoming year, as shown below. The biggest difference was the FHR credits. We have two other Business Platinums, and I had seen a rumor that FHR might add a two-night minimum so I put that at $0. I also told Miles to value Dell at $50. I've had enough of that one!

CreditFaceMy valueWhy
FHR credits$600$0The hotels didn't fit my plans, and we already had two other Business Platinum cards
Airline fees$200$200I expected to use it for incidentals on trips I already planned
Dell$150$50Hard for me to use, even though I had used some of it
Hilton$200$150Hard to get all four quarters now that gift cards no longer count
CLEAR Plus$219$0Other cards already cover it
Wireless$120$100Mostly captured
Total$500

That came to $500 against an $895 fee, or $395 short. Not going to keep the Platinum.

Why not cancel?

I decided I was willing to spend at least the $95 on a Business Green to keep the account open for a chance at an upgrade offer. I've had good luck with receiving solid upgrade offers in the past.

Green or Gold?

I asked Miles what downgrade options I had and it gave me the following options:

Business GreenBusiness Gold
Annual fee$95$375
Flexible Business credit ($20/mo)None$240
Net before ChatGPT−$95−$135

I knew from my other Business Gold that I could easily use the $20 Flexible Business credit each month, so I counted the full $240. Miles also pointed out that the ChatGPT Business credit was the only other Business Gold credit I had used.

That made it pretty simple: if I valued the ChatGPT credit at more than $40, Business Gold made more sense than Business Green.

Side note: I intentionally left out the Business Gold's 4X categories in my analysis. We already had another Business Gold, which we mostly used for software and cloud purchases. Gas is another 4X category, but we don't spend much there. Miles can include those categories when you ask it to calculate a card's value.

Valuing the ChatGPT credit

The $300 credit covers two $25-a-month ChatGPT Business seats for six months, including Codex. The usage limits are not published but I made some rough estimates based on the session logs from my own prior usage and determined I would easily get at least $10 of value per month from the two seats, or $60 over six months. That was enough to make Business Gold the better choice for me.

The decision

I converted to the Business Gold. I requested the product change via online chat on October 15, and the next day I saw an $850.86 Adjust Membership Fee credit for the prorated Platinum annual fee refund and a $354.56 Renewal Membership Fee charge for the prorated Business Gold annual fee.

I recorded the decision in Miles along with my rationale so I have it for future reference. Miles updated my wallet and reminded me to use the Flexible Business credit before the end of the month!

Takeaways

  1. Miles only knows what you tell it. Cross-check against your transactions before you decide.
  2. Compare against the next-best card, not just against canceling.
  3. Don't wait for the annual fee to post if you are going to downgrade. Amex prorates the fee.
