Credits and free nights from your statements

Reconcile your credits and free nights from your statements

Miles knows what each card promises: which credits reset when, and which free night is earned at what spend. It cannot see whether any of it happened, because it never sees a transaction. Your statements can. Hand them to an AI app with Miles connected and it answers Miles' open questions one by one, from the evidence, and leaves open the ones the statements do not settle.

Ten minutes a quarter. Longer the first time, when there is a year to catch up on.

Two rows stay open because nothing on the statements matched. That is the correct result, not a failure: an unanswered question costs nothing, and a wrong 'used' hides money you can still claim.

What you end up with

  • Every tracked credit for the periods you covered marked used, partly used, unused, or unknown, from a real transaction.
  • Every spend-triggered free night either confirmed as earned, with the running total that earned it, or left pending with the total so far.
  • A short list of what is still open and when it expires, which is the list worth acting on.

Before you start

  1. Credits enrolled in Miles. Open the card credits page and turn on tracking for the credits you use. Miles only asks about tracked credits. Credit and free-night tracking are part of Miles Membership.
  2. Miles connected to your AI app, with changes allowed. Follow the steps on Connect. On the approval screen, turn on Also allow changes to your wallet. Without it your AI can read the open questions but cannot answer them.
  3. Statements. PDF or CSV, one per card per month, from your issuer's site. Three months is a quarter of credits; twelve covers every annual one. Name the files by card and month.

If you use a spending connector such as Copilot Money in the same AI app, you can skip the download: the AI reads the transactions from there instead. The rest of the guide is the same.

What leaves your device at each step, and what never does: Your data and your AI.

Step 1: Hand over the statements

Attach the statements to a conversation in the AI app where Miles is connected, or point an agent like Claude Code at the folder. Then paste this:

Here are my card statements for the last three months. Use them to reconcile my Miles credits and free nights. 1. Ask Miles what needs reconciling: every tracked credit with nothing recorded for its current period, and every spend-triggered free night still pending. 2. For each credit question, search the statements for a matching transaction: the right card, the merchant or activity the credit describes, inside the period, roughly the credit's amount. A smaller amount can still be the right one. A statement credit line from the issuer counts as proof too. 3. For each free night, add up the qualifying purchases on that card in its window and compare the total to the threshold. 4. Show me a table of what you found before writing anything: used, partly used, unused, or no match, with the transaction you matched. Then, after I confirm, record it. Do not mark anything used unless you found the transaction. If you searched and cannot tell, record it as unknown rather than guessing.

Your statements never reach Miles. The AI reads them where you attached them and sends Miles a status per credit per period, nothing more.

Step 2: What the AI does

Reads the open questions. Miles hands back questions, not claims: this credit has nothing recorded for this period; this certificate is pending. Each one names what to look for, the date window, and the face amount. An empty list means nothing is open, which is a complete answer.

Searches for evidence. A dining credit shows up as a restaurant charge and, often, a separate statement credit a few days later. An airline credit shows up as a fare or fee on the airline. A resort credit is a charge at the hotel. The AI should match on card, window and kind of merchant, and take the amount as a guide rather than a rule: a $47 airfare against a $50 credit is a match.

Adds up spend for certificates. A spend-triggered free night is earned by a running total, not by any one transaction. The AI sums the qualifying purchases on that card in the window and reports the total whether or not it crossed the line. If it did not, the certificate stays pending and you now know how far off you are.

Records what it proved, and only that. Each answer is written with a note that an agent reconciled it from a transaction, so Miles can tell it apart from something you typed from memory. Unknown is a real status: it means someone looked and could not tell, and it stops Miles asking again without asserting anything.

Step 3: Act on what is still open

The AI's last message should be the short list: credits with no match and days left in their period, and certificates still pending with the total so far. Ask it for the list by name if it does not offer one. Then:

  • A credit with no match and time left is the one worth spending. Use it and record it, or let the next reconciliation find it.
  • A credit whose period has ended with no match is gone. Record it as unused so the question closes; it is useful to know which credits you never use when the annual fee comes up.
  • A certificate close to its threshold is a reason to move spend to that card before the window closes. Miles' which-card advice does not know about the gap unless you tell it.

Without an AI app

  • Credits: the card credits page records each period by hand and shows what is still open.
  • Free nights: the perks page lists every certificate with its status; confirm a pending one there once you know you crossed the threshold.
  • What is expiring: the perks page flags a certificate as urgent inside its last 60 days, and the card credits page shows what is still open in the current period.

When to do this again

Quarterly, in the first week after the quarter ends, so the airline and dining credits for the last period are settled while the new period is still open. Once more in early January for the annual credits. Any time an annual fee is about to post, run it first: the card at its annual fee guide assumes the credit ledger is current.
